  92. George Russell became the CEO of his grandfather’s brokerage company, Frank Russell Co., after his grandfather died in 1958. It became Russell Investments, which created several well-known Russell indexes.

  93. Sam, a graduate of Stanford University had built a career at Nutrilite Health Institute and was at that time president of the company.

  94. Bruce was a graduate of Northwestern University and had done his apprenticeship in the industrial real estate development business with the very prominent real estate firm Renault & Handley in Palo Alto, California. This was the same firm where one of my friends and classmates, John Arrillaga, did his apprenticeship. John, had given over a half billion dollars to Stanford University in the form of cash, buildings, landscaping, etc. He was responsible for replacing the old Stanford football stadium with a new, state-of-the-art facility.

  95. Rick was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and of the law school there. He was working for the law firm of Miller, Groezinger, Pettit, Evers & Martin in San Francisco when Sutter Hill Development Co. hired him. He became president of Sutter Hill Development Co. in 1976 and later ran the joint venture program for Weyerhaeuser Company.

  96. Franz was born in 1942 in Solingen, Germany, and immigrated to the US after graduating from high school at the age of eighteen. After just a couple of years of bouncing around from job to job, he found his niche in selling Mercedes-Benz cars to extremely successful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs such as Larry Ellison of Oracle and Mervin G. Morris of Mervyn’s department stores. Over the years, he has repeatedly been one of the top Mercedes-Benz salesmen in the US.

  97. After trying several business ventures in the United States, Peter finally found success in developing real estate in Mexico. He built and sold for profit a magnificent house high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Cabo San Lucas in Baja California. With that success behind him, he continued to live in and develop more properties in Mexico.

  98. Tim had attended Stanford University on a football scholarship, playing first string center on the varsity team in 1965 and 1966. After graduation in 1967, he worked as a real estate broker for Coldwell Banker and was hired to replace me upon my retirement at Cypress Properties.

  99. Glenn attended Stanford on a football scholarship, played first-string linebacker, and graduated in 1968. He got his MBA from The Wharton School. After his years at Sutter Hill, he worked in real estate development in Newport Beach and later joined Roger Sippl, founder of Informix in Palo Alto, California. The two of them continue to invest in software computer businesses in the Silicon Valley.

  100. Steve graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1967, and moved to San Francisco, first working for Sperry Rand and later with the Pacific Stock Exchange. Subsequently, he joined Genstar Ltd., a Canadian conglomerate operating in San Francisco, and eventually taught a course in entrepreneurship at the University of California, Berkeley.

  101. Jack graduated from Whittier College in Whittier, California, where he played football and baseball. After a stint in the army during World War II, he played professionally for a short time in the baseball minor leagues. Later he became a teacher and coach at Whittier High School. Jack went on to become the principal of the high school and later the mayor of Whittier. After retirement, with Erlene, they owned and operated a travel agency in Whittier.

  102. Dick had been an All-CIF high school football player in 1953. He went on to play football at Whittier College and later became head football coach at Alhambra High School in Alhambra, California. He became an assistant football coach at the University of Southern California under head football coach John McKay. In 1976, when McKay left USC to assume the head coaching job of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he took Dick with him to become vice president of operations for the Buccaneers. Dick later accepted the job as vice president of operations for the Los Angeles Rams.

  103. Ed and I became acquainted at his scuba diving retail outlet in Newport Beach. There was something about his demeanor and how softly, but not with braggadocio, he demonstrated his diving expertise. Using the Carrie Lynn, we did many dives together around the neighboring Catalina Islands.

  104. Al could best be described as eccentric. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1960 and had been a fraternity brother and sometimes a roommate of the all-American and All-Pro football player Alex Karras. His favorite line describing his feelings about Iowa was to say he was from “Death Moines.” Al loved sailing and was a member of the San Francisco Yacht Club.

  105. Jay was from a fourth-generation California family. I had heard from one source that his family was listed as being a member of the first one hundred California families. True or not, he came from a pioneering family of growers and shippers. He was raised in Santa Cruz, California, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1959, where he was a member of the golf team. He broke with the family’s agricultural roots and pursued a career in commercial real estate, first as a broker with the Coldwell Banker Co., later with Sutter Hill Development Company, and subsequently as a co-founder of Cypress Properties in Palo Alto, California. He was a member of the exclusive Bohemian Club, which has had notable members such as Henry Kissinger, Walter Cronkite, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Charles Schwab, Ambrose Bierce, Bret Hart, Mark Twain, and Jack London. The average waiting period to be accepted into the club can be as long as twenty-five years after first filing an application.
